{"id":992,"date":"2011-03-29T08:07:19","date_gmt":"2011-03-29T12:07:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=992"},"modified":"2011-04-02T20:47:30","modified_gmt":"2011-04-03T00:47:30","slug":"tutorial-multi-coloured-smocking-plates-in-illustrator-pt-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=992","title":{"rendered":"Tutorial: Multi-Coloured Smocking Plates in Illustrator Pt 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>OK. \u00a0I owe everyone an apology here. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been crazy busy with work lately. \u00a0Throw in a dash of travelling, a couple of magazine articles, sewing, writing and, every so often, sleep, and sometimes something slips through the cracks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>See, I&#8217;ve had this blog post ready for a couple of weeks. \u00a0I set it up to post automatically. \u00a0That&#8217;s great &#8211; except for the fact that after I wrote it, I forgot to switch it from &#8220;Draft&#8221; to &#8220;Scheduled&#8221;. \u00a0So while I was going about my life, thinking everything was hunky-dory with my Illustrator tutorial, it was languishing in electronic never-never land. \u00a0Thank heavens for the sharp eyed Bobbi A., who emailed me and asked (very politely, of course) &#8220;Uh, where is it?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So here, after a totally unintentional delay, is Pt. 3 of the Multi-coloured smocking plate. \u00a0Enjoy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Claire<\/em><\/p>\n<p>40.\t Create a new layer between the Picture and Row layers.  Rename it \u201cEmbroidery\u201d.  Lock the \u201cCable\u201d layer.  Highlight the \u201cEmbroidery\u201d layer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"tutorial2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial2-28.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>41.\tIn the colour palette, change the fill to \u201cnone\u201d.  Click on the stroke box and change the colour to the CMYK colour you created in Step 27.<\/p>\n<p>42.\t Hold down the space bar and move off the page, to the blank workspace.<\/p>\n<p>43.\tChange to the Pen tool (Hotkey: P).<\/p>\n<p>44.\t Create the first petal of a six-leaf detached chain flower.  Click in the blank workspace and drag the Bezier handles.  While dragging the handles, click Alt to transform the point into a corner.<\/p>\n<p>45.\tAt the top of the petal, click and drag the handles sideways while holding Shift.  The handles will stay level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"tutorial2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial2-29.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>46.\tClose the shape by clicking on the original point.  Even out the Bezier handles on each side of the point so that the petal is symmetrical.  Use the Direct Selection tool to nudge the handles into place (Hotkey: A)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"tutorial2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial2-30.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>47.\t With the Pen tool (Hotkey: P) draw a small line perpendicular to the top of the petal, duplicating the holding stitch of a detached chain.<\/p>\n<p>48.\tLeaving the petal highlighted, activate the Rotate tool (Hotkey: R).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"tutorial2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial2-31.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>49.\t A small blue bulls-eye will appear in the centre of the petal when you activate the rotate tool.  Click on the bulls-eye and holding down the mouse key, drag the bulls-eye to the bottom of the petal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"tutorial2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial2-32.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>50.\tWith the rotate tool still active,  a small black cross mark will be visible in place of the cursor arrow.  Click and rotate the petal approximately 60\u00ba while holding down the Alt key to copy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"tutorial2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial2-33.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>51.\t Duplicate the petal by clicking Ctrl+D four more times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">52.\tUsing the selection tool, select the entire detached chain flower.<\/p>\n<p>53.\tWith the flower still highlighted, group the flower into a single unit by clicking Ctrl+G.<\/p>\n<p>54.\tIf necessary, scale the completed flower down using the Selection tool. (Hotkey: V).  To do this, click on the shape to reveal the bounding box.  Put the mouse over one of the corner points and decrease the size of the flower so that it is the right size for the smocking plate.<br \/>\n55.\tClick on the \u201cNew Symbols\u201d button in the Symbols window.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"tutorial2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial2-34.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>56.\tRename the symbol clicking on the symbol itself. \u00a0 \u00a0A small pop-up window will appear. \u00a0Rename the symbol &#8220;Detached Flower&#8221; and click OK.<\/p>\n<p>57.\t Randomly place seven or eight copies of the new symbol on the present.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"tutorial2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial2-36.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>58.\tLock the cable layer.  Unlock the images layer.<\/p>\n<p>59.\tZoom in until the present fills the entire workspace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"tutorial2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial2-37.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>60.\tUsing the selection tool (Hotkey: V), highlight the outline of the bow.  Copy the bow shape by clicking Ctrl+C.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"tutorial2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial2-39.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>61.\t Unlock the cables layer and highlight it.  Paste the bow outline onto the cable layer Ctrl+V.  Using the selection key, drag the outline until it aligns with the cables.<\/p>\n<p>62.\t With the bow still highlighted, open the Stroke window (F10) and change the stroke weight to 2pts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"tutorial2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial2-40.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>63.\t Lock the cable layer.  Unlock the \u201cEmbroidery\u201d layer.<\/p>\n<p>64.Drag the \u201cTitle\u201d symbol from the symbols window onto the work space.
