{"id":3621,"date":"2017-09-06T08:00:09","date_gmt":"2017-09-06T12:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=3621"},"modified":"2017-09-05T10:10:51","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T14:10:51","slug":"simple-drawstring-bag-tutorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=3621","title":{"rendered":"Simple Drawstring Bag Tutorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a simple bag pattern that makes up quickly and is great for a lunch bag, small shopping bag and general catch all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3649\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Simple-Drawstring-Bag-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Simple-Drawstring-Bag-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Simple-Drawstring-Bag.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s super quick and easy to make, too, so it&#8217;s perfect when you need a quick gift or sewing project and don&#8217;t have a lot of time. \u00a0It was recently featured on The Shopping Channel and it makes a great project for the beginner sewer, with lots of options and ways to personalize it. \u00a0I used fabrics from Camelot Fabric&#8217;s new <a href=\"http:\/\/camelotfabrics.com\/fabrics\/designs\/flutter-buzz.html\">Flutter and Buzz<\/a> collection, Threaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crafterscompanion.co.uk\/fusible-fleece.html\">fusible fleece<\/a>, plus a few bits and pieces from my stash.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3648\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Simple-Drawstring-Bag-Opening-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Simple-Drawstring-Bag-Opening-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Simple-Drawstring-Bag-Opening-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Simple-Drawstring-Bag-Opening-140x140.jpg 140w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Simple-Drawstring-Bag-Opening.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here are the supplies you&#8217;ll need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3\/8 yd fabric for bag fabric<\/li>\n<li>3\/8 yd fabric for lining<\/li>\n<li>12 x 33&#8243; fusible fleece (optional)<\/li>\n<li>a scrap of contrasting fabric at least 12&#8243; x 2 1\/2&#8243; or 24&#8243; of 1\/2&#8243; wide single fold bias tape<\/li>\n<li>1 yd of 1\/4&#8243; ribbon<\/li>\n<li>thread to match<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tools:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sewing machine<\/li>\n<li>Rotary cutter and cutting mat<\/li>\n<li>Ruler<\/li>\n<li>Iron and ironing board<\/li>\n<li>Marking pen<\/li>\n<li>Pins<\/li>\n<li>Safety Pin or blunt darning needle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0Print out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/DrawstringBagPattern.pdf\">DrawstringBagPattern<\/a>\u00a0and cut the following pieces from <i>both<\/i>\u00a0the outer fabric and the lining: \u00a0two rectangles 12&#8243; x 14&#8243; for the upper bag and one circle for the base. \u00a0From the contrasting fabric, cut two strips <em>each<\/em> 1&#8243; wide and 11 1\/2&#8243; long for the casings. \u00a0(Note: if you&#8217;re using 1\/2&#8243; bias tape, cut two pieces 11 1\/2&#8243; long instead).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3634\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Drawstring-Bag-supplies-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Drawstring-Bag-supplies-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Drawstring-Bag-supplies.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">2. \u00a0For a sturdier bag with more body, cut out two rectangles of fusible fleece 11 1\/4&#8243; x 10 3\/4&#8243; and one base circle, using the dashed lines of the base piece for your cutting line. This is an optional step, and your bag will be just as nice without it, if you decide to skip it, just floppier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">3. If you&#8217;re using the fleece, follow the manufacturer&#8217;s instructions and fuse the fleece to the wrong side of the outer fabric, leaving a 3\/8&#8243; (1cm) space along the long sides and the bottom edge. \u00a0There should be approximately 2 1\/2 of the outer fabric above the top edge of the fleece.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3629\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Adding-Fusible-Fleece-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Adding-Fusible-Fleece-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Adding-Fusible-Fleece.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">4. Fold in the long sides of the casing strip to the centre to make the strip 1\/2&#8243; wide. \u00a0Press. \u00a0Then turn under the short ends 1\/4&#8243; and press again. \u00a0Repeat with the second strip.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">5. Lay the casing strip 1\/2 across the outer fabric, so that it is 1\/2&#8243; above where the fusible fleece ends. \u00a0With the RS (right side) of both the outer fabric and casing facing up, pin the top edge of the casing to the line, centering it between the long edges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pinning-Casing-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pinning-Casing-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pinning-Casing.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">6. Still using the free arm, sew through all the layers of the bag just underneath the casing. This will let you &#8216;draw&#8217; up all the layers when the bag is finished (and sorry, I forgot to get a picture!) \u00a0Set the upper bag aside for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>14. \u00a0Put the base of the sewing machine back, so that you are no longer using the free arm.<\/p>\n<p>15. Pin the circle cut from the lining to the fused base so that you have a sandwich of lining-fusible-outer fabric. \u00a0Pin. \u00a0Baste by sewing around the edge of the base to secure the layers together. \u00a0From this point forward, treat the base as one layer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">16. \u00a0RS facing, pin the upper bag to the base. \u00a0Make sure your pins are perpendicular to your stitching line, not parallel. \u00a0This way, if you do miss a pin or sew over one (and you should try\u00a0<em>really, really hard\u00a0<\/em>not to sew over your pins &#8212; it&#8217;s BAD for your machine if you hit one and can cause a lot of damage), chances are your needle won&#8217;t strike it directly. \u00a0This part can be a little fiddly &#8211; I pin the circle at 12, 3, 6 and 9 first and then ease the rest of the circle to fit the upper bag.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3640\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pin-Upper-Bag-and-Base-together-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pin-Upper-Bag-and-Base-together-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pin-Upper-Bag-and-Base-together.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Using a 3\/8&#8243; seam allowance and , slowly sew around the base, securing the upper bag and the base together.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">17. \u00a0Trim the seam allowance to 1\/4&#8243;, neatening the edges.
