Association of Canada Basic Crewel correspondence course last January.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram.jpg\" alt=\"Crewel Monogram\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-140x140.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My initial impression wasn&#8217;t great. \u00a0Although my counsellor was very helpful, the lessons themselves were really an uphill slog and the way the course is designed is really off putting, with a level of expectation that very few people, and certainly no beginner, could realistically be expected to meet. \u00a0The amount of stitching and research were incredible. \u00a0I hope they&#8217;ll consider making some serious updates and I&#8217;ve expressed that in my review of the course.<\/p>\n<p>That said, I decided that I had enough invested in the course, between the registration fees and the the materials that I ought to finish it. \u00a0So I continued to slog away over the summer and fall and finally sent off my last three samples last week.<\/p>\n<p>The one project I really enjoyed though was the monogram component.<\/p>\n<p>I was tasked with stitching my initial. \u00a0I knew immediately that I wanted to do a design based on an illuminated letter. \u00a0I looked at several. \u00a0I really liked the colours of this one, and I used it as a starting point for my colour palette, but I thought it would be too hard to stitch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3504\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture3.jpg\" alt=\"Capture3\" width=\"584\" height=\"616\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture3.jpg 675w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture3-284x300.jpg 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I finally settled on this design (and no, I can&#8217;t remember what book I used but it did come from the <a href=\"www.archive.org\">Internet Archive<\/a>) \u00a0It&#8217;s a much simpler design and the black and white outline made it simple to transfer. \u00a0The design itself is 5&#8243; square.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3505\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture2.jpg\" alt=\"Capture2\" width=\"585\" height=\"598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture2.jpg 544w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture2-294x300.jpg 294w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I kept to a fairly small group of stitches: \u00a0Long and short stitch and satin stitch for the four-petal flower.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-1.jpg\" alt=\"Crewel Monogram detail 1\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-1.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The berry is padded satin stitch, bullion and satin stitch. \u00a0The stems are, logically enough, stem stitch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3489\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-2.jpg\" alt=\"Crewel Monogram detail 2\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-2.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-2-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I stitched the daisy twice. \u00a0Initially, I&#8217;d worked it in off white but there wasn&#8217;t enough contrast between the creamy twill background and the flower and it got lost. \u00a0So I ripped it out and worked it in a soft pink. \u00a0Each petal is padded with a detached chain, before I worked horizontal satin stitch across it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3490\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-3.jpg\" alt=\"Crewel Monogram detail 3\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-3.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-3-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also changed my mind about the leaves. \u00a0I&#8217;d started working them in long and short stitch, like the blue flower. \u00a0I&#8217;d intended to give them shading and a central vein. \u00a0But they were just too small (for instance the leaves at the bottom of the stem are only 1 1\/2&#8243; and an 1 1\/4&#8243; long) and the complicated shapes made it almost impossible to get smooth or convincing shading.<\/p>\n<p>So I started from scratch and ended up outlining the leaves in split stitch and using contrasting texture, rather than contrasting threads, to give them interest. \u00a0The seed stitch gives some balance and openness against the density of the satin stitch details.<\/p>\n<p>The initial also went through several versions before I settled on the navy blue outline and french knot filling. \u00a0I particularly like the piece of fuzz\u00a0on the side of the letter. \u00a0I managed to photograph it so nicely&#8230;! \u00a0so clearly! \u00a0Well, it isn&#8217;t cat hair, so I guess i should be grateful for small mercies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3492\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-5.jpg\" alt=\"Crewel Monogram detail 5\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-5.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Crewel-Monogram-detail-5-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My plan is to finish this by mounting it in a box as a decorative lid. \u00a0I&#8217;ll also add some gold beads, scattered here and there to add a bit of richness and contrast to the matte wools. \u00a0I haven&#8217;t added them yet because they aren&#8217;t strictly &#8216;crewel&#8217;
