{"id":3068,"date":"2014-06-02T14:33:03","date_gmt":"2014-06-02T18:33:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=3068"},"modified":"2014-06-02T14:33:03","modified_gmt":"2014-06-02T18:33:03","slug":"my-saturday-with-the-forest-city-smocking-guild","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=3068","title":{"rendered":"My Saturday with the Forest City Smocking Guild"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although it&#8217;s true that smocking is more popular in the States, especially in the south, there are still plenty of ladies here in Canada who love the art of smocking too. \u00a0 This past weekend, I spent some time with the members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/forestcitysmockingguild.webs.com\/\">Forest City Smocking Guild<\/a>, who are located in London, Ontario.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/WIN_20140531_090442-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3057\" alt=\"WIN_20140531_090442 (2)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/WIN_20140531_090442-2-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"538\" height=\"717\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/WIN_20140531_090442-2-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/WIN_20140531_090442-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/WIN_20140531_090442-2.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 538px) 100vw, 538px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For those of you who aren&#8217;t up on your Ontario geography, it&#8217;s in the south west of the province, about half way between Toronto and Detroit. \u00a0It&#8217;s an hour and a half from my home, which means it&#8217;s too far to go for monthly meetings, but when I heard the guild was celebrating their thirtieth anniversary this year by inviting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amberlane.ca\/index.html\">Judith Marquis<\/a> to teach a one day workshop, I knew I wanted to go. \u00a0(Q: How do you know it&#8217;s a bunch of Canadians smocking? \u00a0Well, Judith told us that a number of years ago, while she was working in a knitting store, she became intrigued by the cable knits and crossover stitches available to knitters. \u00a0She wanted to see if she could recreate a similar effect in smocking. \u00a0 Here is the sampler I made following Judith&#8217;s instruction. \u00a0They really do look like knitted cables, don&#8217;t they?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3064\" alt=\"twisted cables sampler (1)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-1.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My sampler is a selection of different cable patterns. \u00a0Some have two &#8216;ropes&#8217; (that&#8217;s Judith&#8217;s terminology), densely bunched, others are more open and feature three or four &#8216;ropes&#8217;. \u00a0 Some of the ropes are shaded, other patterns have solid colours. \u00a0The variations that are possible are really limited only by the stitcher&#8217;s imagination.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3066\" alt=\"twisted cables sampler (3)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-3.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-3.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some of the patterns are narrow, and would work beautifully on an armband. \u00a0Or they could be mirrored to create a whole design for a bishop or a partial yoke dress.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3067\" alt=\"twisted cables sampler (4)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-4.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-4.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-4-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the day progressed, we continued to work on increasingly complex designs. \u00a0 I think this one is my favourite.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3065\" alt=\"twisted cables sampler (2)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-2.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/twisted-cables-sampler-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I would love to do a partial yoke dress with this design. \u00a0I think it looks like woven ribbons. \u00a0Isn&#8217;t the shading neat? \u00a0It&#8217;s a very simple thing to add but it immediately adds a sense of depth, simply by varying the same colour from dark to light. \u00a0Of course, my sampler colours aren&#8217;t gorgeous, but I chose them primarily for their contrast, so that I could easily follow each of the elements through the pattern, and when referring to the sampler for inspiration later, be able to identify the key components.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/WIN_20140531_091157-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3058\" alt=\"WIN_20140531_091157 (2)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/WIN_20140531_091157-2-1024x433.jpg\" width=\"744\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/WIN_20140531_091157-2-1024x433.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/WIN_20140531_091157-2-300x126.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/WIN_20140531_091157-2-592x249.jpg 592w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 744px) 100vw, 744px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a lovely day. \u00a0I&#8217;ve taken classes with Judith before and she&#8217;s delightful. \u00a0She walked us very patiently through our strands, our ropes and our cables and if there were the occasional blank looks, it was operator error, not instructor error! \ud83d\ude42 \u00a0 Perhaps it has something to do with my not so organized workspace??
