dresses like my recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/lace-lace-lace\/\">wool and lace confection<\/a>. \u00a0In fact, most of the children&#8217;s clothes I sew are destined for everyday wear &#8211; I make play shorts and sweat pants for the boys, sundresses and easy to wear outfits for my nieces. \u00a0\u00a0I still care about fit and style but I don&#8217;t fuss about interior finishes and choose my construction methods for durability and speed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Back-view-Rainy-Days.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3041\" alt=\"Back view Rainy Days\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Back-view-Rainy-Days.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Back-view-Rainy-Days.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Back-view-Rainy-Days-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example of that: \u00a0a picture smocked dress for my niece, Ellie, that combines my friend Janet Gilbert&#8217;s adorable plate, <a href=\"http:\/\/janet-gilbert.com\/product\/103-rainy-days\/\">Rainy Days<\/a>, with a vintage Pattorama dress from the 1950s. \u00a0As is typical when sewing with a vintage pattern, I added 3\/4&#8243; to lower the waistline and 3 inches to the hem length.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pattorama-8410.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3045\" alt=\"Pattorama 8410\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pattorama-8410.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pattorama-8410.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pattorama-8410-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a dress for school and the park and playing outside. \u00a0It&#8217;s cotton and it&#8217;s designed to be wash and wear. \u00a0Everything was done on machine, from the hem to the piping. \u00a0The inside seams are overcast with zigzag and the neck is bound with bias tape.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-Smocked-Bodice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3046\" alt=\"Picture Smocked Bodice\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-Smocked-Bodice.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-Smocked-Bodice.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-Smocked-Bodice-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had the pattern in my collection for a couple of years and when I saw Janet&#8217;s plate, I knew right away that they would work perfectly together. \u00a0I like the arched insert; it makes a nice change from straight as an arrow inserts. \u00a0 I used my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/tutorial-blocking-smocked-yokes-with-freezer-paper\/\">freezer paper technique<\/a> to cut and secure the smocked insert before I applied the piping. \u00a0 I think the dark blue sets it off really nicely.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rainy-Days-picture-smocking.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Rainy Days picture smocking\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rainy-Days-picture-smocking.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The raindrop fabric is the last piece of the puzzle. \u00a0It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fabric.com\/buy\/0289702\/timeless-treasures-rain-drops-white\">Timeless Treasures Raindrop<\/a>\u00a0and I couldn&#8217;t have found a more perfect fabric. \u00a0It&#8217;s bright and modern and balances well against the very classic style of the dress.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Close-up-Rainy-Days-picture-smocking.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Close up Rainy Days picture smocking\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Close-up-Rainy-Days-picture-smocking.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I made a few tweaks to Janet&#8217;s plate &#8211; I changed up the floss colours so they would match my fabric. \u00a0I also went with cast on flowers instead of lazy daisy. \u00a0I also added &#8216;grass&#8217; . \u00a0It&#8217;s just irregular single feather stitch, using two strands of green floss on top of a row of cable, but it adds a nice movement, I think. \u00a0But otherwise, it&#8217;s her design and I&#8217;m so pleased with how it turned out. \u00a0She does such nice designs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/cast-on-flowers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3042\" alt=\"cast on flowers\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/cast-on-flowers.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/cast-on-flowers.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/cast-on-flowers-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On one of my sewing forums, there was a discussion recently about the ubiquitousness of people selling patterns riddled with poor drafting, especially collars. \u00a0People were sharing their frustrations and their horror stories. \u00a0I definitely agree. \u00a0The difference is night and day between a badly drafted collar and a good one. \u00a0Look at the fit and the smooth shape of this collar. \u00a0It meets front and back and lies so nicely around the neck. \u00a0This is how a collar is supposed to fit!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Close-up-collar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3043\" alt=\"Close up collar\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Close-up-collar.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Close-up-collar.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Close-up-collar-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The back of the dress is closed with four dark blue buttons. \u00a0These are vintage buttons, from my collection. \u00a0They suit the dress to a tee and they match the dark blue contrast fabric exactly. \u00a0You&#8217;d think I&#8217;d planned it but it was just a happy coincidence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/vintage-button.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3049\" alt=\"vintage button\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/vintage-button.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/vintage-button.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/vintage-button-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So there you have it, a play dress that combines modern fabrics and smocking with a vintage pattern. \u00a0I think it&#8217;s a success. \u00a0My marching orders were &#8220;lots of colour, with flowers&#8221;. \u00a0Hopefully this meets the bill!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And now for something completely different!
