{"id":2254,"date":"2012-10-10T13:14:18","date_gmt":"2012-10-10T17:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=2254"},"modified":"2012-10-10T13:15:03","modified_gmt":"2012-10-10T17:15:03","slug":"spring-bouquet-update-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=2254","title":{"rendered":"Spring Bouquet Update #1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve started climbing Mount Everest.<\/p>\n<p>A quilted, appliqued Mount Everest better known as Laundry Basket Quilt&#8217;s &#8220;Spring Bouquet&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t buy the pre-cut shapes or the QOM option. \u00a0 Firstly, I don&#8217;t like the idea of doing raw edge fusible applique on anything but a &#8216;daily use&#8217; quilt. \u00a0I think it looks messy and not appropriate for an heirloom style quilt like this. \u00a0Secondly, it costs a fair penny to sign up for the blocks, especially when you add in shipping and then I&#8217;m limited as to the colours I&#8217;m working with. \u00a0So instead, I chose to make my own selections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"springbouquet\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bouquet-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All of the batik fabrics are from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.connectingthreads.com\/collections\/Batik_Paradise_Quilting_Fabrics__L117.html?intmedid=navBatiks\">Connecting Threads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m always interested to know what people spend on their creativity. \u00a0 So, in the spirit of disclosure, all of the fabrics, including the backing and background cost me $142.00, plus shipping and taxes. \u00a0 Incidental supplies like my new mini Clover iron, basting glue and mylar circles were another $40 for a total of about $215.00. \u00a0Then I spent $6 on mylar for the applique shapes locally, plus $25 + shipping for the pattern itself. \u00a0 That&#8217;s a total of about $270, which is very good for the degree of work and the size of the overall quilt, I think, working out to a around $7.50\/square foot, with batting still to be purchased.<\/p>\n<p>So, enough about the bottom line. \u00a0How&#8217;s the quilting going?<\/p>\n<p><em>Slowly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"springbouquet\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bouquet-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>After five weeks, I&#8217;ve completed prep for four blocks at this point. \u00a05 blocks and four borders to go. \u00a0Then everything has to be sewn down. \u00a0Originally, I intended to hand applique my pieces but I&#8217;ve given up on that plan and am going to machine applique them. \u00a0It would be lovely to sew them all down by hand but the hundreds of hours that that would require are not something I can justify, or frankly, enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>Each square represents around 8-10 hours each. \u00a0That includes cutting the fabrics, starching and ironing the raw edges and then gluing it into place. \u00a0 It&#8217;s going to be an incredibly labour intensive project. \u00a0Honestly, I really had no idea going in that there would be so much time involved &#8211; far more than the patchwork quilts I&#8217;ve sewn up to this point.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"springbouquet\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bouquet-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been using Erin Russek&#8217;s fabulous <a href=\"http:\/\/erinrussek.typepad.com\/photos\/applique_tutorial\/index.html\">applique tutorial<\/a> to prep my shapes and it makes for such lovely results. \u00a0If you&#8217;ve been using freezer paper up until now, try this technique instead. \u00a0I can&#8217;t recommend it highly enough.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/erinrussek.typepad.com\/photos\/applique_tutorial\/1.jpg\" alt=\"applique tutorial\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One trick I have come up with to keep my layouts straight has been to take a digital photo of all the pieces in situ, after I&#8217;ve finished prepping them at the ironing board.<\/p>\n<p>Since each block has between 50-70 individual pieces, and each piece has to be fussy cut to showcase a particular colour, it&#8217;s no easy feat keeping 28 pink petals, a dozen purple ones and whole bunch of leaves and stems straight and looking nice without help! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Once I&#8217;ve taken a snapshot, I can take them off the layout guide, lay out the background and glue them back where I&#8217;d intended without worrying that I&#8217;m going to muck up the layouts. \u00a0If I&#8217;m unsure, I just turn on my camera and zoom in on the image. \u00a0It&#8217;s a big, big help.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what block nine looked like during layout. \u00a0Haven&#8217;t taken &#8216;finished&#8217; shots of the other blocks yet so that&#8217;s why I haven&#8217;t post them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"springbouquet\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bouquet-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m just working away at it steadily. \u00a0When I need a break, I take a break and work on something else. \u00a0Recently, that&#8217;s been Hallowe&#8217;en costumes. \u00a0They&#8217;re looking pretty spectacular, if I do say so myself. \u00a0What have you been working on? \u00a0Something really detailed or fun and fast? \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve started climbing Mount Everest.
