{"id":1718,"date":"2011-08-13T11:26:07","date_gmt":"2011-08-13T15:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=1718"},"modified":"2011-08-13T11:26:35","modified_gmt":"2011-08-13T15:26:35","slug":"tutorial-designing-geometric-smocking-plates-in-illustrator-pt-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=1718","title":{"rendered":"Tutorial: Designing Geometric Smocking Plates in Illustrator Pt 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is the third part of my tutorial on designing geometric smocking plates. \u00a0 For the first two parts, including the illustrator file you&#8217;ll need to complete this tutorial, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=1537\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=1666\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t completed the first two tutorials, you\u2019ll want to practice and complete them first before tackling the final tutorial on creating geometric plates, as I build on the basic skills from each of the earlier lessons. \u00a0You\u2019ll find the first two tutorials and all related downloads here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=855\">Tutorial: Designing Smocking Plates in Illustrator<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/?p=986\">Tutorial: Multi-Coloured Smocking Plates in Illustrator<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">60. \u00a0 Using the direct select arrow (Hotkey: A), select any stitches that extend past the pleats. \u00a0Delete them. \u00a0<em>Tip: \u00a0Because the symbols are grouped, using the selection arrow (Hotkey: V) would highlight the entire grouping; using the direct select arrow allows you to remove only those elements or even individual bezier points without effecting the rest of the design.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345 aligncenter\" title=\"geometric smocking plate tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial3-57.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">61. \u00a0When you have cleaned up all of the rows, your plate should look like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345 aligncenter\" title=\"geometric smocking plate tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial3-58.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">62. \u00a0Open the layers window (F7). \u00a0Lock the &#8216;cables&#8217; and &#8216;crossover rows&#8217;. \u00a0Unlock and highlight the &#8216;row&#8217; row.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345 aligncenter\" title=\"geometric smocking plate tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial3-59.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">63. \u00a0Drag the &#8216;Title&#8217; symbol from the symbols window onto the plate. \u00a0Drag the &#8216;row number&#8217; and place it on the upper holding row on the left side of the graph.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345 aligncenter\" title=\"geometric smocking plate tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial3-60.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">64. \u00a0Change the keyboard increment (Ctrl+K) to 16mm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345 aligncenter\" title=\"geometric smocking plate tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial3-61.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">65. \u00a0With the &#8216;row number&#8217; highlighted, hold the Alt key and tap the down arrow, until each gathering row is numbered.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345 aligncenter\" title=\"geometric smocking plate tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial3-62.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">66. \u00a0Select all of the row numbers and the title symbol (Ctrl+A).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345 aligncenter\" title=\"geometric smocking plate tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial3-63.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">67. \u00a0Click on &#8216;Break Link to Symbol&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"geometric smocking plate tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial3-70.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">68. \u00a0Using the type tool (Hotkey: T), rename the smocking plate &#8220;Cross Over Trellis&#8221; and your name. \u00a0Renumber the row numbers H, 1-9, H.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345 aligncenter\" title=\"geometric smocking plate tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial3-64.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">69. \u00a0Depending on which version of Illustrator you are using, the following message may appear:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345 aligncenter\" title=\"geometric smocking plate tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial371.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If it does, click &#8216;update&#8217; so that you can modify the text.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">70. \u00a0Open the swatches window (Window&gt;Swatches). \u00a0Click on &#8216;new swatch&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345 aligncenter\" title=\"geometric smocking plate tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial3-65.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">71. \u00a0Create a new swatch with the following details: \u00a0Swatch Name 3053 Green Gray, Color Mode RBG, R 156, B 164, G 130. \u00a0Click &#8216;OK&#8217;. \u00a0A new swatch will appear in your swatch library. \u00a0When you roll your mouse over it, the name of the swatch and its DMC colour will appear. \u00a0<em>Tip: for a complete list of DMC colours translated into RBG, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xstitchtreasures.com\/DMCFloss-RGBvalues.html\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345 aligncenter\" title=\"geometric smocking plate tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial3-66.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">72. \u00a0Repeat the process from #71 to create three additional DMC colours. \u00a0All the colour modes are RGB:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">3831 Raspberry Very Dark, R 179, G 47, B 72<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">3883 Raspberry Light R 234, B 134, G 153<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">3716 Dusty Rose Med. Very Light R 255, B 189, G 189.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Tip: although it takes a little longer to manually create these new swatches, the advantage is that the swatches can be used for any plate you design and your colourways will be consistent between designs. \u00a0If you are making a simple design for individual use, using the colour window and choosing the colours by value is fine. \u00a0If you are planning on making your plates available for sale or publication, having consistent values and a ready made swatch book that corresponds to actual DMC thread numbers is advisable.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">73. \u00a0In the layers window, lock the &#8216;row&#8217; row. \u00a0Unlock the &#8216;crossover&#8217; row.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">74. \u00a0With the selection tool (Hotkey: V), highlight the cross-over rows. \u00a0Click on &#8216;break link to symbol&#8217;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">75. \u00a0With the cross-over rows still highlight, click on one of your new colour swatches to change the cross-over rows&#8217; fill colour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">76. \u00a0Return to the layers window and lock the &#8216;crossover&#8217; row. \u00a0Unlock the &#8216;cables&#8217; row and following steps 74-75, colour the rest of the plate to your taste. \u00a0When you are finished it will look something like this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345 aligncenter\" title=\"geometric smocking plate tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clairemeldrum.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/tutorial3-67.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">77. \u00a0Save your tutorial as &#8216;crossover trellis-yourname&#8217;. \u00a0This tutorial will print to an 8 1\/2 x 11 sheet of paper. \u00a0It can also be saved as PDF for stable digital transmission. \u00a0To do that, click &#8216;Save As&#8217; and change the file format from &#8216;Adobe Illustrator&#8217; (*.AI) to &#8216;Adobe PDF&#8217; (*.PDF).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">78. \u00a0To make your own designs, reopen the file &#8216;tutorial3.ai&#8217; and click File&gt;Save a Copy&gt;geometric original.ai.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">79.
