F.A.Q.
Do you do custom dresses for special occasions like christenings or weddings?
No. I don’t do custom sewing at this time. Occasionally, I will take commissions to design original picture smocking plates. My rates begin at $50/hr. Please contact me by email if you have a special design in mind and you would like a quote.
How did you get into publishing your designs? Do you have any special training? Are there any hints or tips if I want to write for magazines, too?
I fell into my writing and design efforts largely by chance. I have always sewn and embroidered and becoming a freelance designer was a gradual (and unexpected! process). It is not for the faint-hearted. If you are interested in publishing in magazines, I recommend you familiarize yourself with the titles you are interested in submitting to and contact the editor for their preferred submission policies. The Annual Writer’s Yearbook also provides excellent information on current magazine markets and trends.
Do you publish your own patterns that sewers can purchase? Can I buy one of your designs or patterns directly? Do you have a shop on Etsy or another ecommerce site?
Although I have begun exploring the possibilities of starting my own line of patterns and smocking plates, those plans are still in the early stages. Currently, I don’t offer my patterns for sale direct to the public but that may change in 2010, so visit my blog often for the latest news.
Do you teach workshops? Would you come and speak or teach at our upcoming guild event?
Yes! I love to teach and I specialize in teaching embroidery and sewing to adult learners (although I have a blast when I teach kids, too). I list my upcoming workshops and teaching events here. If you would like to discuss having me come to your group, please contact me by email with a description of your group’s location, interests and the approximate date (if known) and I will be happy to discuss my rates and availability for a personalized group workshop.
